My family and I have been regulars at Basic Bistro in Tung Chung since it opened on 10th January 2024. In just four and a half months, the restaurant and team have not only kept their original high standard but pushed higher in both their cooking and customer care making it a must-visit dining destination in Tung Chung.
Led by founder Budathoki Chitra, (Chit for short) and a core group of family and close friends, Basic Bistro’s concept of ‘joie de vivre’– the joy of living, sprang to life.
Like Hannibal Smith from the A Team, Chit assembled an experienced co-founder team including his chef brother Suman and friends Jay and Sushi, all experienced restaurateurs and hospitality experts. Maximising their shared passion and knowledge for creating extraordinary dining experiences, the Basic Bistro team followed their dream and created their own restaurant.
When you walk into Basic Bistro, you do feel that passion. Chit explained to me how the collective dream and vision turn into reality. The decor is considered and inviting. A mural on the wall depicts a street scene from what looks like 1930s Paris. Chit brought in French artist Eric Réno, known for his work around Asia on high-end restaurants and bars. Every detail, from the inviting ambience to the thoughtfully crafted menu, exemplifies the restaurant's dedication to creating unforgettable dining experiences. The colours all complement one another with the burnt orange chairs offsetting the azure blue glasses. The cutlery is golden and heavy in your hand.
The menu? Classic with a mix of Western fusion. Menu items include a bouillabaisse, escargot, sous vide beef cheek, Seabass and Coq au Vin to fish and chips or Momos. Every dish I’ve tried was always great, with the presentation being the best in the area by far and the price point very generous given the quality of the ingredients, attentiveness of the service and portion sizes.
Nestled away on the first floor of the Sheraton's T-Bay, Basic Bistro provides a tranquil and cosy atmosphere perfect for enjoying a leisurely Sunday roast, catching up with friends, or impressing your date over a flaming Crepe Suzette.
